RSV

What Should I Do?

Based on CDC and WHO guidance, checked against those sources on Oct 12, 2026. Educational information only — not a diagnosis or a substitute for a licensed healthcare professional.

Common symptoms

  • Runny nose
  • Congestion
  • Decreased appetite
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Fever
  • Wheezing
  • In very young infants: irritability, decreased activity, or pauses in breathing — sometimes without fever

Symptoms usually start 4–6 days after infection. These symptoms can also be caused by other illnesses.

Seek emergency care for

  • Trouble breathing, or pauses in breathing (apnea) in an infant
  • Not drinking enough fluids (in babies, fewer wet diapers)
  • Symptoms getting worse
  • In adults: chest pain or pressure, sudden dizziness or confusion, or trouble eating or drinking

When to contact a healthcare professional

  • If an infant has trouble feeding, fewer wet diapers, or is unusually sleepy.
  • If an older adult or someone with heart or lung disease becomes short of breath.
  • If symptoms worsen after the first few days.
