Why the numbers aren't real-time

Agencies collect, check and publish data weekly, so official numbers usually lag by days to weeks.

Hospitals, labs and health departments report to national agencies, which check the data before publishing, usually once a week. Some countries report less often. That's why every number in OutbreakWatch shows "data through" a date.

Wastewater data often rises before hospital admissions, so the two can differ for a while.
